About Mandalas

Although not a series as such, there are a lot of mandalas, and I have collected them here so that you can enlarge them (by clicking on the captions)

From far back in history, mandalas have existed as spiritual symbols in many religions and cultures, with many somewhat similar, but also many rather different meanings! Today, they have a variety of meanings, uses and practices for different

For me, above all, they are a symbol of unity in diversity, of interconnectedness.

I hope to write more about mandalas soon.

My mandalas are made the way most of my art is, these days : I see something; it “speaks to me” or reminds me of something else. I take a photo of it and then I fiddle with the photo! Some of these mandalas were made from photos of such things as : a streetlight, dregs from a bowl of yogurt, a mess on a black plate which grew crystals, and the bottom of a saucepan !

The older Sunflower pictures are actually two from a larger series, some of my first attempts at digital collage. Behind each sunflower, with its mandala-like seed-centre, are two mandalas, symbols of various religions.

The gallery below will show you larger versions if you click on the titles. You can view the whole series including the text for each one here.
